CREATIVE WRITERS CLUB

Welcome to the first Creative Writers Club meeting to be held online.  Thank you for taking the time to read this agenda and feel free to share this with the rest of your household whilst isolating. A little creativity is just what we need right now. I will be introducing tasks and challenges, suitable for families to enjoy.

The things you will need for this group session.
  • A pencil or pen.
  • Crayons, colouring pens or multi colour pencils.
  • Plain white paper. (or ruled.)
  • Or a laptop if you prefer to write on one of those instead.
  • A place for the group to take place, ideally a table that fits the family but still allows plenty of room between people.
  • Snacks. Always good to have at a group.
  • Liquid refreshments. If you want the proper meeting experience then coffee or tea but soft drinks are equally acceptable. Whatever keeps you hydrated.
The tasks will be displayed below. Choose whichever ones you wish your family/friends (can be an online meet up, after all) or fellow budding writers wish to do. I will post a selection of ten different tasks to keep you busy for at least an hour. Have fun!

1. Reflections. (Write about your thoughts/emotions/feelings about the past two weeks and write for five minutes. Try and get down every stressful thought you have and every fear you are feeling. As soon as you have finished, fold up the paper and desposit in a jar for safekeeping. The problems will still be there, but they are packed away for a little while so you can concentrate on having fun.

2. The Penguin Experience. (I was fascinated recently how a California Zoo let some penguins roam around and visit the other animals in the absence of actual people. Write from the perspective of a penguin visiting the other animals in the zoo. What does he feel when he sees them? Does he enjoy tapping at them through the glass. Does he feel like a human?)

3. CYOM! (A fun task for the whole family. You must draw your own monster, straight from your imagination! It can be as bizarre as you wish or as scary as you can make it. Will it have tentacles? What about giant feet? What would you name this monster creation?)

4. Favourite! (I want you to list your favourite things, from books to movies to types of food you enjoy. Once you have a list you are to pick one and try and sell it to the rest of your family members. Make it sound as pleasant as possible and try and get them agree that it is their favourite thing too! Extra props for something generally unpleasant that you make sound as nice as possible.
For example. My favourite thing is rats. They are great company, fun to be around and behave like little dogs. They are cute and tremble in their sleep, dreaming about sweet treats.

5. Count to three and everyone go to a different room in the house. Pick out one random object (toilet paper is not allowed on this exercise, unless you really need to go to the bathroom) and write about that object's point of view. What is it like to be a thing? Are you proud that humans can use you? A day in the life of that object, straight from the object's mouth.

6. Pet thoughts. (Are you wondering what your pet is thinking? Is he/she looking at you right now? Try getting into their little minds. If they could speak, what would their words sound like? What would their thoughts be? Would they dream of catching balls and finding sticks? Maybe your cat is plotting to take over the world?)

7. 777. (Choose a random book from your library. Go to the seventh page, choose the seventh word and write down seven words from that point. Your mission? To write your own short story with those seven words as a starting point. Good luck!)

8.  Three Goals. (Describe three goals you have set yourself. Why those goals? How can you achieve them?)

9. Perfect Day. (Describe a day that you remember that went well.)

10. World Leader. (If you were the ruler of the world, what things would you banish and why?)

Thank you for attending this group. I hope you have had a wonderful time.  Stay safe and at home :)
